Woah, my first year as a high school art teacher is in the books. I can still remember calling my Dad when I was nervous about accepting a high school job. . . was I ready for high schoolers? Could I handle a HS classroom? I honestly thought I was going to get chewed up and spit out. However, I am happy to say that after spending a year at my new school, Gateway H.S, I made the move needed for me. I love the culture here, the students, and most importantly getting high schoolers excited about ART. I’ve met so many amazing students, and getting a little sappy here before graduation,

I just want to say I love teaching HS ART.

fairy tales: retold with comics!

So you’re going to have to bare with me, I mean my students had too, but I’m going to really NERD out here. There is no hiding the fact that I love fairy tales. . . now add that with comic drawing&illustration. . . WATCH out! During semester one, I taught comic strips, but many students struggled with the storyboard/idea for their comic drawings. This semester, however, I wanted to bring in more of a literary element, along with giving students a little bit more direction with their story making. So here (after watching many Once Upon A Time episodes) came up with the Fairy Tale: Redefined project.

graffiti stencils continued

Graffiti stencils were a fantastic way to wrap up the school year. My students really took to this project because they were able to a) use spray paint (whats not cool about that?!) and b) choose an image of their choice for the stencil.  Here are some finals along with students working;
